LSP Coverage
LSP meets your needs
The benefits available under CPOA’s Legal Services Program are designed to provide you with a broad base of legal coverage:
- Pending Action Consultations: If you believe you are a subject of a civil, administrative or criminal action, or believe your retirement benefits are going to be withheld, you can call the LSP for advice.
- Civil Actions: If you are involved in a civil suit while acting in the course and scope of your employment, an LSP attorney will be provided for your defense if you are denied representation by the public agency. You will also be provided with legal representation or a second opinion if the representation you are receiving from the public agency is inadequate and you are exposed to personal monetary risk.
- Administrative Actions: If you come under investigation for possible administrative discipline, you can receive legal representation immediately. You do not have to wait until you are given a Skelly letter.
- Retirement Appeals: You can receive legal representation before appropriate boards for appeals relating to disability retirement benefits.
- Criminal Defense: You will be provided legal representation if you are subject to criminal prosecution for acts or omissions occurring within the course and scope of your employment, up to the filing of either a criminal complaint or grand jury indictment, at no expense to you.
- You must be a member of the California Peace Officers’ Association to enroll in the Legal Services Program.
- At this time, we are not accepting applications from line level personnel. Current members will be allowed to remain within the program until the Trustees approve all new changes and determine exit dates for existing officer-level members.
