Award of Ethical Courage
Purpose

The Award of Ethical Courage is designed to recognize law enforcement professionals whose actions have demonstrated the personal courage to “do the right thing,” despite adversity and/or popular opinion to the contrary. It is intended to commend and spotlight individuals who do not confuse “silence” with “loyalty and integrity” and who have the strength of character to withstand the criticism and accept the personal risks associated with their decisions.

Eligibility

The award is open to all law enforcement personnel. CPOA membership is not required.

Nomination

Nominations may be made by any member of CPOA.  Online submissions are encouraged, however a brief written document supporting the nomination may be faxed, mailed or sent electronically to cpoa@cpoa.org, and received in the CPOA office by July 30th

Approval Process

Nominations will be forwarded to the Standards and Ethics Committee where they will be reviewed. Those nominations that meet the award criteria will be forwarded to the Awards Committee for final review and approval.

Although intended to be awarded annually, the credibility of this award demands that recipients be selected only in those years where the Standards and Ethics Committee determines a nomination meets the award criteria.
